                                 „Action on food waste to date has been left to voluntary commitments by
                                 food businesses, which have yielded slow and untransparent action and
                                 almost entirely side-lined food wasted on farms where the majority of supply
                                 chain food waste occurs – with the highest on-farm waste
                                 occurring in industrialised wealthier countries. Currently,
                                 retailer policies generate waste in their suppliers and custo -
                                 mers. To avert climate crisis, we urgently need to accelerate
                                 progress by implementing regulations – like mandatory food
                                 waste reporting for businesses over a certain size, legally
                                 binding food waste reduction targets,  funding to generate
                                 farm-level food waste baseline data, contracts based on
                                 hectarage, date labelling reforms, increased taxes or bans
                                 on food waste to landfill and incineration, banning of exces -
                                 sive cosmetic standards, and strengthened unfair trading
                                 practices legislation.
